Suzuki Swift (10 - present)

A former Irish Car of the Year, the Swift has been a major success for Suzuki and is the culmination of years of hard work and attention to customer feedback. It seems to tick all of the boxes, in terms of efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. As far as styling goes, it has a hint of sportiness but is utterly solid and well planted. It is definitely one of the better looking cars in its class. The cabin works well with a neat, tidy dash and plenty of cubbyholes for smaller items. There’s a generous amount of standard spec, considering its price tag. Leg and head room is decent, and boot size isn’t bad either. On the road the Swift shows its real credentials. It’s a great little car to drive and is fun on motorway or city streets. It handles particularly well and there is real quality to the suspension which provides for balance and grip.

Look out for

•  Makes sure the necessary recall work has been carried out

What we like

•  It’s a great little car to drive; handles really well

•  There are some good engines

•  Scored 5 stars in the Euro NCAP crash test

•  Cheap to buy and has low running costs

•  Generous amount of standard equipment and safety features

What we don't like

•  It gets quite noisy when driving at high speeds
