SsangYong Korando (11 - present)

It may not be as prominent or as well-known in Ireland as other Korean car brands such as Kia or Hyundai, but SsangYong gives you the option of owning a car that stands out from the crowd. The Korando has been around for some time. Now into its fourth generation, it has been built to give the better known and popular ‘crossovers’ a run for their money. With its chunky looks, the Korando ticks the ‘crossover’ boxes. It has acres of space in the cabin, with more than enough room for five passengers, and a large boot. The versatile seating system means the seats can easily fold flat to increase load space. There’s a lot of kit; the dashboard can take some getting used to. Given the amount of technology and the strong engines, it is worth noting that the Korando comes with a reasonable price-tag; a lot of bang for your buck. In terms of driving, it doesn’t really spring any surprises; it handles well, the steering feels light, and the ride is soft, but the strong engines give it the ability to tow some seriously heavy loads. It’s not bad off-road either.

Look out for

•  It understeers quite a bit on corners, heavy handed ESP kicks in

What we like

•  A stylish looking crossover, back on Irish roads in style

•  Capable of towing seriously heavy loads

•  Versatile seating system; they can fold flat to increase load space

•  It is surprisingly efficient for a big car

•  It does have some off-road capability

What we don't like

•  The diesel engine can get quite noisy when overworked
